Sports
Sports Department was incepted in 1984. Earlier it was
functioning under the umbrella of Education department
Chandigarh. Now the Department has established its full fledge
establishments of Sports Directorate, District Sports Officer
and Chandigarh Sports Council. Additional Deputy Commissioner is
holding the charge of Director Sports under the over all
supervision of the Secretary Finance and Sports, Chandigarh
Administration.Since the Sports and games play a very
important roles in Physical , mental and social development of
human resource whereas the excellence in sports enhance the
sense of achievements. A well established and adequately
equipped sports stadias and playing grounds in the different
disciplines of Sports have come up covering all the zones of the
city. Lake Sports Complex, Sports Complexes, Sectors 7, 42, 46,
Cricket Stadium, Sector 16,Table Tennis Hall, Sector 23, Hockey
Centre Sector 18, Football Centre, Sector 17, Skating Rink,
Sector 10 are the main stadias/centres of the Department.
Besides this Sports Department have two swimming Pools in Sector
23 and one Swimming Pool at the Lake Sports Complex. Not only
the courts stadias Pools and playing areas are proved to the
players these facilities have been extended to the General
public. The works of all weather Swimming Pool ((Yoga Centre),
Sector 23 is already in progress. Recently Cricket Stadium,
Sector 16 has been increased for 30,000 Spectators for holding
of practice matches on 4th & 5th October,2006 of Sri Lanka &
Bangladesh with Punjab IX. The Department has broad based sports
and games by involving the educational institutions i.e.
Colleges and Schools. Others main projects are likely to be
undertaken such as Multipurpose Hall at Lake Sports Complex and
Indoor Basketball Courts. Scheme of Sports wings and Scholarship
have been instructed as incentive to the players. Sports
department has 40 coaches working in the various stadias/centre
who are imparting training to the players for honing their
skills and abilities accordingly.
Chandigarh has produced so many National & International
players and athletes who have donned India colour in various
disciplines of sports especially Hockey, Cricket Athletics, judo
Table Tennis Weightlifting, Boxing, Wrestling and Skating etc.

Chandigarh has hosted so many prestigious National and
International Tournaments like Asian Rowing Championship Indira
Gandhi Women Hockey Gold Cup Asian School Hockey Tournament Men
Cricket series women Cricket Test Matches ATF Tennis
Tournaments. All India Civil Services Tournaments, All India
Gurmeet Memorial Hockey . AK Mishra Boxing Championship National
Sports Festival for Women Sr & Jr. Nationals in various
disciplines of Sports.
Youth Affairs
Since 1997, Sports Department has starting co-ordinating the
youth affairs activities alongwith the various activities in
Chandigarh. This wing of sports is intend to help young people
to find out their potential. The main objective behind the youth
affair activities are education, awareness, training self and
social development, National Integration. Since it is to retreat
that the commitment for the all round development of youth and
people of Chandigarh can only be achieved through the
introduction of various youth activities among the students,
sports participants and general public which may prepare the
youth in service of the country through intellectual cultural
and social developments. The following youth affair activities
are being taken care by above said wing – National Youth
Festival, State Youth Festival/Rural Sports, Adventure
activities, national Integration camp, leadership and youth
camps etc.
Chandigarh Football & Hockey Academy
The Chandigarh Football & Hockey Academy was established as
per the initiation taken by Lt. Gen. J.F.R. Jacob, PVSM (Retd),
the then Governor of Punjab and Administrator U.T. Chandigarh
with an aim to groom the talent in the discipline of Football in
this region. Initially, the Chandigarh Football Academy was
started in August, 2000 with the induction of 24 young boys of
9-10 years of age. In August 2002 the Department has taken
another leap by instituting Chandigarh Hockey Academy for 24
boys in the age group of 11-12 years. The academy was renamed as
"Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy".
The trainees are being kept in the Academy for seven years,
wherein stress on Football & Hockey training as well as
education is being given. The first batch of football players
inducted in Aug. 2000 & Hockey players inducted in July, 2002
has pass out on 31st March. 2007 and 31st March, 2008
respectively. Conducive environment for specific coaching and
training on scientific basis has been provided in Sports
Complex, Sector-42, Chandigarh. In this academy all facilities
have been provided to the players on "ALL FREE" basis. Latest
imported gym machines worth Rs. One crore have also been
installed in the Sports Hostel, Hockey stadium, Sector-42.
